Today saw us visit the Jorvik Center, York. We were looking forward to this one as we had distant memories of this from our visit some years ago. We pre-booked as advised and arrived within plenty of time.
First thing we noticed was that the Non pre booked line was very long but the pre – booked line was empty. We asked the security bloke about going in early to be told that we would have to wait and he advised to get a coffee. Which we did.
As we waited we noticed that both lines started to fill up. I asked again but was told that we were still to early (15 mins)!
We eventually joined the line and entered.
Point 1: Appeared to me that the non pre-booked and pre-booked lines moved at relatively the same speed, so why pre book?
Once inside you descend into what was a packed room with a glass floor with a mock up of the archeological dig below. A guide dressed as a Viking shouted some information about it, but due to the amount of noise it was difficult to follow and you couldn’t really see what he was talking about.
Point 2: Overcrowded area with only two information stations available to look at. Felt rushed and obliged to join the large queue for the ride.
Having queued again we set of on a gondola ride which takes you around an animatronic journey through Viking York.
Point 3: This part of the center was interesting with lots of fascinating information and some great animatronics.
Once off the gondola we entered the exhibits room. I have been in better if I am honest. Again with the large amount of people it felt rushed. There were some interesting things such as the actual skeletons of Vikings and an explanation of who they might have been and what their ailments were.
Point 4: Overcrowded and not very user friendly exhibits.
We then ascended some stairs expecting more only to be spat out into the gift shop and exit!
Point 5: Value for money was poor. Expected more.
To conclude, we were disappointed. We spent more time in a queue than looking at the exhibits.
