Carlton Hill, Edinburgh

So after a busy morning involving TV tables and second hand shops, I dropped wife and daughter at The Playhouse, Edinburgh while I parked up and explored Carlton Hill.

Carlton Hill, an iconic landmark nestled in the heart of Edinburgh. As I ascended the steep hill,

(I hoped that they had oxygen available at the top.)

I was greeted by a symphony of architectural wonders, including the striking National Monument, inspired by the Parthenon in Athens. This unfinished masterpiece serves as a poignant reminder of Scotland’s ambition and determination.

(In essence just a building job stopped half way through as the money ran out!)

Continuing my ascent, perched atop Carlton Hill stands Nelson’s Monument, a towering tribute to one of Britain’s greatest naval heroes, Admiral Lord Nelson. This majestic structure, erected in the early 19th century, serves as a poignant reminder of Nelson’s monumental victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and his enduring legacy in British history.

Completed in 1815, just ten years after Nelson’s death at the Battle of Trafalgar, Nelson’s Monument was designed by architect Robert Burn in the distinctive neoclassical style. The monument takes the form of a towering stone column, standing over 100 feet tall.

In addition to its commemorative function, Nelson’s Monument also served as a navigational aid for ships entering the port of Leith. Originally equipped with a time ball mechanism, the monument would drop a large ball at precisely 1:00 pm each day, allowing sailors to synchronize their chronometers for accurate navigation.

(Considering the cost, a clock that only tells the time once a day is a bit shite.)

Nelson’s Tower

Let’s move forward onto the views which are amazing walking around the top we are rewarded with unparalleled panoramic views of the cityscape below. From the majestic Edinburgh Castle to the sprawling greenery of Princes Street Gardens, the vista from Carlton Hill is nothing short of mesmerizing.

(The paths are well worn not surprisingly due to the amount of people who have trodden them since the 1700’s when the walk was first introduced.)

To conclude. If when in Edinburgh you are bored with the amazing array of shops and restaurants then take a walk up Carlton Hill.

(You’ve probably seen it from the below as you’ve been exploring the city anyway.)

I promise you will not be disappointed.

(Unless you have a heart problem, then maybe give it a miss or bring your own oxygen.)
